Now we are at a point where we are seriously having a conversation about esports and how they are the future. The very idea that we could have a conversation of this sort five or six years ago was not something that most would have believed. Sure, there have always been these competitive and very popular games that are played by a lot of people. Games like League of Legends and Dota are always going to attract a massive user base. Even counter strike is a game that is popular with gamers around the world.
But what many did not expect, even those who are a self-proclaimed esports junkie, is that you could make some very good money from these games. Now we have so much sponsorship that is going on with these games. And another thing that is great for the esports junkie is that it is much easier to watch games online. Now we have sites like Twitch, and even YouTube has a gaming section where people can live stream their games and get donations. It is so great to see that we can now have people that can make a living based on playing video games, especially if they are very good at the game.
And it is not just about streaming or producing YouTube videos related to games. We are also seeing very real esports leagues for some of the most popular games in the world. These games, such as CS:GO, League of Legends, Dota 2 and Overwatch, these are games that are now getting very serious with the prospect of having a proper esports league. Some of the leagues are already underway, while others are just getting started. And there are millions of dollars at stake for those who are good enough to win the leagues.
What we are interested in seeing is whether we can have even more growth for the industry. What matters is not only ensuring that sponsors are staying on board, but that viewers are coming in even greater numbers than before. If that viewership can go up a level, then esports are in a good spot.
